 4L80E
So... where's the best place to get a prebuilt 4L80E? Looking for one that's been completely gone through, has the modified 2.97 1st/1.57 2nd gear ratios, more or less stock stall converter, and able to handle at least 500HP/500TQ. Need to find out how much needs to be put back for this.

linish Line Transmission 4L80E-5 Extreme Duty Level 5
$3150.00
with core exchange
$850 - 4L80E LS1(GEN3, 2 or 4wd)
or
$600 - 4L80E (GEN 1, 1E & GEN 2 LT1 2 or 4wd)
and if you want the GM 5 pinion planet upgrade, that'll be another $550.
Am I correct in assuming that the stock 4l80e trans uses 4 pinion planets while the stock 4l85e uses 5 pinion planet gears?
I would bet that they could throw in that alternate set of gears if you wanted.
Too bad that a set of thm-200r4 gears couldnt be swapped in I love the 2.75:1 1st, 1.57:1 2nd gear and the high 0.67:1 OD gear ratio. When that 0.67:1 OD ratio is compared to the 0.75:1 OD ratio of the 4l80e/85e trans, you would see about a 300-400 rpm difference.

Those are the guys that built the 4l80e trans that was used in Parish's 10 second GMT800 4wd reg cab shortbox GEN 3 408 stroker, twin turbo beast. Over 1000rwhp/1100rwtq. FLT knows how to build a trans.

Parish would run some passes with the FLT 4l80e trans then when he sent it back to FLT, they would develop upgrades to fix "the weak link". IIRC 1 of Parish's 4l80e's was the 1st 80e to get a 300M billet input shaft.
Parish sold his truck to a guy who lives in Mexico, who still races the truck.

After having just changed my 4L60 for a 4L80 I feel that the 80 could benefit from the 2.75-1.57 gear set.
However I think the 2.97-1.57 set would give you the same 1-2 bog as the 4L60.

If only FLT would take back my level5 60e and put the money I spent on it towards a level5 80e . Finish Line Transmissions, is a good company to deal with(answered all of my ?) and as soon as I save enough I will be going back with them. My .02

I'm sure if I will or not, I am a bit timid. I have pulled the trans out of my truck so many times that I want this time to be the last. ^ was more about wishing that I hadn't spent the money on the 60e and had it for the 80e.

So... if Finish line is the go-to for the 4L80E, who is the go-to for the transer case? Need to have a NP246 rebuilt to bolt onto a 4L80E.
Funding is getting close, unfortunately slippage is becoming more noticable. Damned truck's already pushed me into an illness causing me to miss 2 days of work this week. I feel lahk ze doo doo, and ze Nyqul with whiskey chaser is messing wiz ze mind... I'm hoping it'll last 2 more months.

Sweet - Finish Line does transfer cases.
Not so sweet - the guy said the 2.75 gear set is not available for the 1997+ LS transmissions. Not sure what I'm going to do here, because my current tire and gear setup is going to need either the higher gearset or phenominal low end torque. I'm going to be calling to discuss Monday. TCI says they have a 2.75 gearset for the 97+ transmissions, going to hope this is a new product the guy at FLT isn't aware of yet.
Apparently the 2.75 in the older 4L80E is 700 bucks, the 2.97 is 2200 bucks.

Better choice would be a Gear Vendors O/D behind a stock-geared 4L80-E.

This is for a chick who can't even handle a manual trans. A Gear Vendors unit would be more complicated to use than what's in there now, so can't do it. If she can't put it into OD and just go, she's not gonna go for it, even if it's just pushing an extra button. The less she has to think about the better. Thanks though.

I thought you could set the GV unit to engage itself at a certain m.p.h. No?

I poked around the site and didn't see anything that showed that. I know that a few years ago they were supposed to be able to integrate operation to work with the factory computer, but haven't heard anything about that. Last I heard you operated it by letting off the gas and reaplying or something along those lines.

Oh yeah, I forgot this is no longer your truck. F-it, roll the 4L60-E. Performance parts should not be wasted in such a manner!
The GV has an on/off switch on the floor like an old high-beam foot switch.

The 4L60E is almost strong enough for the 2.8L in my old 87 S15. This truck will be towing a boat eventually, so the 4L80E is what it'll get.

Wow... 6 speed 4L80E...
I spoke to Chuck at FLT today, he's working up a quote to do a 4L85E and the transfer case. The quote should be to me by the end of the week, maybe early next week. Looks like it'll be an old style case, at least 1995 model, and will be doing the 2.75 first gear. Apparently the 2.97 gear set is 2200 bucks and the 2.75 is 700 bucks. The transmission will also be set up to handle a 500+HP engine and capable of towing. Told him I'm shooting for May to get the ball rolling so I can do the work when it's warm out. I also gave the board a plug, and mentioned Hog as the recommending member.
I wonder if he might be able to leave the factory 1st in there to make it a 5 speed?

Hey thanks Speeder, I appreciate the plug.
I wonder why the 2.75:1 gearset is so much less than the 2.97:1 gearset?

No idea, he advised something like one-off gears or something, guess there's no real demand for it. Still waiting back on the estimate, and hope he'll answer on whether a 5 speed auto would be possible by leaving the factory 1st gear in there. That would be extra nice. Not gonna sweat it if not though.
