mpg readout display??

Post mpg readout display??
I was in my buddy's 98 explorer the other day and noticed that it has a small display up on the ceiling above the center console. This display shows estimated MPG, average MPG and estimated distance you could drive on whats left in the tank.

Is there an output on the 411 for this information? I could have sworn that I saw such an output either in the wiring file on in EFIlive.

I know that this information can be displayed on the Driver Information Center on the newer GM vehicles. Is there a way for me to have a display of some sort in my truck, short of installing a display out of a newer truck? Did GM have anything like that display in the fords? Somthing I could just place somwhere without large dash modification?

Just wondering

thanks
Jesse

I'm sure Patrick will elaborate on this some but there is a product that allows you to display MPG and other info:

Is the black plastic spacer around the scan gauge homemade? Or is that somthing that can be purchased?

That's a GM blank panel for the overhead console cut for the ScanGauge, with a bead of black caulk around the edge. The ScanGauge isn't designed to be flush mounted but that ended up working out well. Just takes some time with a dremel.

hmm. looks pretty good either way.

Might be lookin into one of them in the near future.

I'm wondering if I can get a second OBDII port and solder it inline so I could keep the scan gauge hooked up at all times while leaving the underdash port open? Could this cause any foreseeable problems?

I just cut the obd-II connector off the scangauge cable and hard-wired it to the harness leading to the OBD-II port on the truck. That way I could use my scan tool with the scangauge at the same time.

I like the trip computer on Scangauge but hate the lcd look.

I have a Nitrod meter which also gives fuel consumption + G-Meter, but lacks a trip computer.

What I'd like is somthing like Edge does but they only have it for diesels:

Here's another one:

Fuel trims but no trip meter

And there is a factory DIC that you can put in the 96-99 GMT400 trucks..

its from the 00 S-10 overhead console - (you can remove the DIC and put it anywhere) has temp, compass, mpg, trip-meter..miles to empty...but i'm not sure how to wire it up?

http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/interior-tech/324335-project-s10-dic-silverado-overhead-console.html

But, thanks for showing us the ScanGauge as well.. that is something i am interested in.. i don't need the compass/temp that the S-10 DIC offers as its already an option in my 99 kon..

But, seeing as how the ScanGauge has 12 built in gauges.. thats pretty cool

yeah, it would be alot easier to hard-wire in.. and more informative - also cheaper than the other ones posted

Only one thing? does it have a back-light?

-edit-

Quote:

User Settable Backlight Display Color

7 Standard screen colors and a custom setting with 63 possible colors.
Backlight for night use
Both display and keys backlit
User settable Off, Low and High
Big display - 50% larger than the original ScanGauge

Yes it does..

Did you read the part about the xGauge, adding in trans temp, horsepower etc?

I was thinking about doing a gauge pod w/ tranny temp.. fuel pressure, and fuel level (my fuel gauge in dash has alot of problems)...

but this thing can do the tranny temp.. and tell me miles untill i'm empty.. so theres two gauges i don't need.. lol

yea. im putting the 4L80 in right now and dont currently have access to a TIG welder. So until I do, I wont be able to switch my Temp sensor into the new trans. This scangauge would make a nice temporary trans temp gauge. . .on top of everything else it does that is

Mine did not display trans temp. They have had a few software updates since I got mine so maybe the new ones do.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned the Aeroforce Scangauge. Its a 2 1/16" gauge that shows quite a bit of useful stuff.

It has mpg/fuel remaining but no mention of distance to empty?

Interceptor scan gauges

This amazingly powerful 2 1/16" (52mm)
gauge provides real time information
allowing you to diagnose problems, measure
performance, fuel economy, and read and
clear trouble codes. It does it all and looks
great too!

Simply plug into your diagnostic port to display just about
anything you'd want to know about your vehicle.

-Dozens of critical parameters available for every supported
vehicle. Can view 2 to 8 at a time in large, easy to read numbers
without touching the gauge.

-Record and play back data on gauge, no need for laptop or
other device

-Accepts 2 additional sensors without requiring any additional
equipment unlike other copycat products. Allows you to read
such things as air/fuel ratio, EGT temps, etc. that are not on the
vehicle from the factory.

-High intensity warning lights can be programmed to indicate
unsafe vehicle operating conditions.

-Integrated shift lights.

-Available in numerous configurations allowing you to match or
customize your dash!

Yes the 96-99 trucks have trans temp available on the class-2 bus.

Have the interceptor gauges got a dimmable backlight yet?
