Post Which Walbro?
I've had a quick look through ebay but I'm not sure which Walbro 255 pump I need to replace my stock pump?
Anyone know?

Thanks

Howard

Bought a Walbro...it's on its way.
I'll fit it into my old (OEM) pump housing and swap them over at some stage.
Got a bad feeling about my present pump.....little signs! Neutral

Since I started reading about these fuel pump issues, I got the same feeling all the time.

On a lighter note isn't it funny how you see some people not knowing anything about cars driving some old junk coast to coast. Entirely in good faith, with no worries AND no problems.
And us? Most of us carry entire tool boxes + parts and are still worried. Rolling Eyes

Back in my Army days, I was driving a 72 Chevelle during AIT (Advanced Individual Training). It took 4 quarts of oil per tank of gas. And it burned it. Engine was wore completely out. When school was finished, we drove to Arkansas for a couple of weeks before I went to Germany in that car. Took 22 quarts of oil to drive from Augusta GA to Fort Smith AR, averaging 80-85MPH. I remember looking into the rear view after traveling through valleys on the interstate, there would be so much smoke that it looked like a dirt road. We'd have to stop about every quarter tank for baby checks, I'd throw a quart in while the wife checked the kid. Good times, that. Wish I could have done something about the engine, but when you are a Private in the army and you have a family, there isn't all that much left for extra stuff after the diapers and formula are paid for. Need to wait until you are at least an E6 if you want a family on the enlisted side.

Any certain one that you bought? Do considerations have to be taken in regards to current draw burning up the wiring?

This is what was said by Y2Klimited in a thread when I was going to put in a new fuel pump....

"absolutely no need to change the fuel pump.....I ran a 255 in my truck and I had to gut the regulator and install an external adjustable one because the pressure wound up being too high due to the increased flow. I have no problem running my 502 ramjet off a factory delco pump, it actually calls for it in the paperwork. Also I've had the eaton posi and 4.10's in teh truck for 30K miles of hellbent torture (to the point I just snapped all teh studs on the right rear a few weeks ago) with no complaints, even with a 200 shot and juice in addition."

This was said regarding me wanting to use the high pressure Walbro 255 fuel pump, that I still have sitting in my tool box. I guess I need to exchange it for the standard unit.

Isn't this one of those eBay "Delco" pumps? Wink

I just hope you don't end up like I did with it:

I ran pretty low on fuel recently...didn't realize.
Since then the sender is playing up and I'm setting misfire codes....which I've never had before.
I'm thinking I'll swap for the Walbro 255 and a new filter.
At the pressures our trucks run...I don't see that the 255 will be a problem.
I know some who've tried using them in the TBI's have had issues with the pressure...but they run at 13psi or something, not 50-60 like our trucks.

Whats involved in replacing one of the pumps? Do you have to drop the gas tank and such?

Yep, either drop the gas tank or unbolt the bed and move it back some, if you've got a truck. My dad and I both found it much easier to take the bed off, I've got an S10 and he has a Silvy. Then you can easily access the in-tank pump.

I have no choice but to drop the tank....but I can do it in an hour at most.

Kit looks good. I'm considering getting a Walbro or just sticking with a delco because I fear mine is going out too. Let me know how it works out.

Honestly don't know Ed.
I went for that one because after alot of research...it seems that's the pump of choice for those using the Walbro pumps.

Post Question on fitting....
OK..well today I decided to make a start on the Walbro installation.
Anyone else done one of these???
I have a question.
The old pump has a small black tube coming from a fitting in the bottom of the bucket to a nipple in the top of the pump.

The Walbro doesn't have that fitting.
It has a hole but no nipple.
Question is....do I need to worry about that fitting?
Do I just pull that tube out and forget about it?

Some general pic's

Sender unit..

With the aid of Vaseline....I managed to get the original rubber sleeve onto the Walbro (it's slightly larger in diameter to the OEM pump...but I got it in there. I've heard the Walbro's are LOUD if you don't use the rubber sleeving provided...figured this would be better still)

Makes for a neat fit!
