LS3 480hp 50 Studabaker no start after drive

Post by 3DTim »

New to form. I got a 50 Commaander I’ve put an Art Morison frame under it and to GM kit whit the LS3 480hp and trans. Here’s my issue. Drove the car about 20 miles shut it off got oil for the first change came out car would not start popped the hood looked for something off or lose no luck tried it again started right up. Drove it home let set for about ten minutes no start let it cool off a little started right up. Showing no codes This is a new build first time out. I’ve had the car running in the shop and no issues. It turns over and can hear the fuel pump come on. I’ve got three years into this build and ready to go for a long drive. I’m not new to EFI as I have a 66 Chevy 2 with a 401sb with a 510 Whipple on to with a Hilborn injection using a Holley HP ECU. So anybody got a clue what I’ve done wrong??

You need to have a scanner hooked up when it want start and watch crank trigger ect. Also check fuel pressure with a gauge. It will set a cel after so many fails.

Thanks for the information. Pressure no problem got a tester for that the scanner may be a problem just trying to find someone that’s got one and hook it up to the car. I’ll start making some calls. Is there and way to hook it up to a laptop and at least see what’s going on?

Can anyone hook me up with a wiring diagram. There’s a lot more wrong with the wiring than I thought. The guy’s that wired it did the worse job I believe I’ve ever seen. I’m going to have to start at ground zero. So I need to know where every goes color and so on. I’m so made now I can hardly control myself. I’ve seen bad wiring jobs before but theses guys take the cake. Any help would be appreciated. Someone tell me how to post pictures I'll show you what I'm working on [/img]

Ok here’s where I’m at. Dead short at the ECU. Replaced the Hot wire still there. So I’m guessing a sensor. So next day I can get out there I’ll start unplugging one at a time still I find it. Anyone have a clue where to start. It would start fine but drive it and shut it off let it set s few minutes no start. Cool off a little start right up. Now will not start at all. Blows the fuse on the 12v.

Little more progress. I know where or what the short is cooling fan or may be the ECU. Pull the 30 amp fuse out of the ECU all’s good put it in pop. Unplug the fan and still blows the fuse witch make me think if the ECU so now. How do I test it or where can I get it tested of fixed? HELP!!!

The ecm is not going to be your problem, if as soon as you put the fuse in it pops you have a raw wire somewhere, if you can't find it , you can jump a piece of wire in the fuse holder for a second and see where the smoke comes from and that is where your short is.

So now it gets hard. Power wire is new and it’s good. The only other wire going to the ecm is the pink wire and it not popping it’s fuse. Fan is not hooked up at all so it can’t be any of the wires coming from it. Is there anything other than the fan that would be tied in to that Circuit?

Well got if fixed at last. Pulled the control box off to see if there was something causing the issue. Well, one wire on the bottom had a bad nick in it. Fixed that and bam it's done. It looks like when they pushed it on the bracket they were not very careful doing it. So everything is working lit should. I have not tried a hot start will tomorrow. Got family things to do. Thanks a lot for the help. :-)

Glad it looks like you've got it licked. Nothing more frustrating than having some small detail holding a project back, esp. with a bunch of new hardware you really want to try out.

The nova looks awesome. What's the drivetrain? I love the look of a sleeper and I'm sure that Studabaker is a beast with a ls3 if you have some gear in it. Let's see some pictures of the leadsled doing a great big burn out! You sir have two beautiful rides!!

The Nova is a 401 with a 510 Whipple N24 Auto Gear 4speed with a Gear Vendor. It’s got the original 12 bolt with 3:90 gears out back. Car was a drag car from day one till I got it.
