Narrowing a rear end?

Post Narrowing a rear end?
What's involved in narrowing a rear end? Do they pull teh axle tubes out of teh pumpkin, then cut, or do they cut off the exle tube ends, horten, then reweld the on the distal ends of teh tubes?

Reason I ask is because I have found a OEM source of 33 spline, 5 x5" axles, only problem is that they are slightly shorter at 30-1/8 and carry p/n 26025564.
this axle was used on the 1991-1996 Cadillac Fleetwood which also used the 14 bolt 9.5" SF rear.

The 2wd 6 lug 14 bolt 9.5" SF has an axle length of 31-9/16 with p/n 15522068 for the 88-98 Chev 3/4-ton . The 4wd of the same 6 lug rear was 33-1/8" with p/n 15521928 for the 88-99 Pickup,Suburban,1/2-ton,3/4-ton.

15522070 is for the 88-99 Pickup,Suburban,3/4 ton 2wd and 4wd but with 8 lug axles with a length of 31-13/16".
26060414 is for the 99-2005 Silverado/Sierra 3/4-ton, Discbrakes 2wd and 4wd 33 spline 14 bolt 9.5" SF length of 33-5/16"

So if I got either a 2wd or 4wd 14 bolt, 9.5" 33 spline axle housing, and shortened the axle tubes by a tad over an inch, I could slam in some 91-96 Fleetwood axles and be able to run the 5 lug axles.

The OEM p/n for a true 5 lug, 14 bolt, 9.5" SF with 33 splines is 26016185. I assume it would be 31 9/16" long.(I now see it listed as 31 5/8", pretty close).

Just curious? Thanks

That is an option, just narrowing would kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

You do have to fill in the old holes, as at least one of the 6 lugs will interfere with the new 5"x5 pattern.

You gotta shorten more than that and get custom axles for drag slicks.

Sorry, I didnt get it. If I had it my way I'd get a S60 rear and mount 2 15" tall/16" wide rims and cheater slicks to match. But if I had the bank to do that, I would also be engaging a serious large displacement naturally aspirated engine, or reasonalbly sized engine along with a pair of hairdryers.
The dreams the dreams.........

it would be nice if you could find a ss454 truck rear 1990-1993. not sure about the length though.
