Has anyone rebuilt a G80?

Post Has anyone rebuilt a G80?
They seem to be strong enough in the 11.5" version... No exploding parts yet..

Not sure if the clutches are shot or not. I seem to have one wheel power most the time. I jacked up one side while parked and let it free spin and after about 3 seconds of freespin it locked and sent me right off the jack. so, it works.. However doesnt seem to on the street. last year in oklahoma I did a burn out brake stand and it locked up solid for a few minutes driving out of a parking lot, felt like a spool. Now it doesnt seem to do much aside from the jack experiment. It's possible the one wheel peel is over 15mph, and doesn't occur long enough for the weights to move out and lock..

I found a website where a guy replaced his clutches, so I know its serviceable.

Any ideas?

I think this is the next step if I can't figure it out. I need more traction.

I like the idea that it puts it down at any speed not crawling speeds..

replacing a carrier.. I'd imagine requires starting over with the shimming process right..Not remotely just bolt in?

Do G80's create slop over time? I've got like 1/2" of play in the rear end. Have for some time... I know I'm not alone, had this on the 1500 and friends F350 is way, way worse.

Just keep track of the shims you take out. which side they came out of, if you don't remove the pinion. that would be a good start, with your shimming. Make sure you have proper backlash and wear pattern. That is what I did with the limited slip diff that I replaced the clutch pack in. I was bang on with the backlash and wear pattern.

I priced parts at employee cost to repair a 10 bolt G80. It was cheaper to buy a truetrac instead.

It's just as well... rebuilding a G80 is like drawing a circle... pointless...

Yeah, midway through this thread I remembered the G80 only locks under 15mph. ( worthless for me )
Plus I don't like how long it takes TO lock. Truetrac seems like the only answer for the AAM 11.5" aside from an ARB air locker. I don't think that's a good fit for me because I'm not crawling. Everything I do is acceleration and either hard dirt or street. Some bias would be nice so I don't end up in a ditch somewhere.

Truetrac it is then, I suppose I'll start recycling cans. Smile Laughing

Does the 11.5 actually use a G80 locking rear differential, or the other stock OEM tractiob aid wihich uses RPO G86 which is what the Trailblazer SS used in it's 9.5" SF. It's an actual limited slip, not a locking rear like the G80 is. I'm guessing it's either an Auburn cone type or an Eaton LSD. The G86 WILL require a friction modifier during lube services as there is always friction material slippage during ANY period of difference in wheel speeds during curves turning etc. Actual limited slips are a bear when the friction modifier isnt used.

11.5 was only available with Duramax or 8.1, so I am wondering if it really uses the G80 Eaton Govlock design?

Does your list of alphanumeric codes actually say G80? This is interesting.

I'll go look in a bit. But from everything I've gathered on the forums..it's a G80. They don't take very often not sure if it's just the size or what. 4wheel parts said the ring and carrier weigh near 100lbs lol..

Where on the vehicle do you find the G80 number? I am just curious.

From what I have seen in the 8.5/8.6 (aka 8 5/Cool, 9.5 and 10.5.

G80 Truck = GovLok
G86 Truck = Clutch LSD
G80 Car = Clutch or Cone LSD (haven't seen a cone LSD in a long time)

The only car i've know to have a cone LSD is the old third gen F-body's and I know the GMT800 trucks are all that Eaton G80 locker.

IIRC I remember seeing an Auburn LSD as an option on a GEN 4 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk upgrade. I think the Torsen which is similar to a Truetrak in that is uses gears to apply power based on toirque sensing.
This all from memory and I certainly could be mistaken.

I'm suprised the Trutrack isnt available for the 10.5 FF, but is available for the 11.5 FF.
