Post Can NVG-243 & NVG-246 use ATF?
In an earlier post I mentiend that my transfer case started leaking shortly after filling it with the new blue Auto Trac II synthetic fluid.
Without entering speculation about systetic vs. nonsynthetic I decided that I will dump the new fluid and go back to conventional.

I have NVG-246, and I read that purportedly only NVG-246 requires Auto Trac fluid. NVG-243 is OK with ATF.

That makes me wonder what is the design difference between that mandates any special fluid in NVG-246?

Or will NVG-246 do just fine with ATF?

The difference is the presence of a clutch pack in the 246 that allows fast engagement of the front axle even when there is torque bias. The clutches need the special fluid.

If I were you, I'd just put in a new output shaft seal. 15 minute job and the seal is cheap.
