 distributor Gear Toast
Think my distributor gear is going to shit on me again I noticed the idle keeps getting worse and worse so I check my cmp retard and its at -10-11. Im sure the gear is getting ground off again and I know I dont have 15000 miles on this one. I have the ebay special distributor in now the aluminium one everyone else has.
So what do I do? Should I go to a bronze gear? Where the heck do you get one for the goofy vortec shaft size? Also I thought I read somewhere these dists had a different shaft size than the origonal plastic ones?

modify the base of the distributor
I cut 2 groves in the 2 ribs above the base about 1 inch above the gear.... to allow more oil to splash on the gear.
The way it is now.... the centering round base stops most of the oil from dripping on the gear. That should help.
May have to mic the shaft after you remove the gear and see what the diameter is and then order from that measurement...... unless someone else has already done this and knows

increasing the oil to the cam/dist gears
*Edit: I type slow loll*
Bronze gear are meant to protect the cam gear and will wear fast and need to be replaced regularly.
Keep your worn gear and machine it down to .500 dia. so it can be used as a bushing for a new composite gear that will last the life of the engine.
Crane recommends filing or cutting a .030-inch-wide by .030-inch-deep groove in the lower ring of the distributor housing immediately above the distributor gear. This slot is cut into a ring that seals a main oil passage, creating a spray of oil that is directed onto the distributor and cam gears for extra lubrication. The stock small-block system relies on splash oiling, which may not be effective at low engine speeds, especially when combined with a high-volume oil pump. The slot can be cut with a three-corner file or a Dremel tool or a hacksaw. This slot must be positioned to face the camshaft drive gear. Position the distributor for proper initial timing, then use this position to determine the correct location to machine the groove so it faces the cam gear.

Thats a good idea. So the bronze gears arent so good? Where would one find a composite gear?

I'll do that to mine next time I pull it out.
The gear on mine was still like new when I had it out a few weeks ago.

.427 use your old one as a sleeve. Cut it down to .500 and get this:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-12140/
Quote:COMP Cams composite distributor gears are manufactured from Carbon Ultra-Poly composite to ensure superior strength and less wear. They are the latest in high-tech distributor gears designed around solving the wear issues associated with bronze gears in racing applications. The polymer gears are ideal for street roller applications--they feature virtually no wear, and they eliminate the problem of spark scatter that's associated with worn bronze gears. The gears have undergone stringent testing in various applications with positive results. Why put up with the hassle of changing bronze gear after bronze gear, when you can switch to composite for extended gear life?
I'm running HP+HV pump on the Chinese distributor for two years now with a Lunati cam that ate gears every two months. With this mod and the right gear, no problem.
The bronze gear is good for racers. It's a maintenance part. It's too soft to last. Well, except for Milodon bronze gear apparently...

Sweet Ill have to find somone with a lathe. I went ahead and ordered another distributor just to get things runnin again then Ill have a spare to mess with while im trying to find a permament solution. Ill let you know for sure what size the shaft is on the chinese distributor. I did track down some bronze gears that fit the stock shaft size but the oil pump rod wouldnt fit in it because it wasnt drilled with 2 different sizes

So does anyone have a lathe that would be willing to make me sleeve for the gear?

I got a bunch of worn gears, I'd have to order a Comp gear to get the exact fit.

So if I ship you a gear can you make it for me? I put the new distributor in tonight and I threw the bronze gear I had on it I figured Id try it out and see what happens. I also cut the small groove in the base of the distributor housing. The bronze gear fits much tighter than the stock gears do there is no slop in the rotor with it like I have always had before and I could never get my cmp retard within 5 degrees before the housing hit no matter if I tried clocking one tooth either dirrection now its set perfect the housing comes close to hitting but its dialed in.

Sure. What I'll do is order myself a composite gear, make the bushing for it and once it's done, I'll send it back to you, shipping cost only.

What distributor did you use in your engine? So far knock on wood, mine has lasted over 233,000 miles and I haven't had any issues. Of course I still have the stock cam too along with the stock oil pump.
