It's got to be pretty awesome since it shares the same base as the Cayenne and Q7. Dunno about the TDI part.

Sounds OK. VW diesels are supposed to be pretty good, but their gasoline engines are crap. If you decide to get one, don't even bother with the gasoline version. I don't know of a single person with a VW gasser built in the last 10 years that didn't have problems with whole quarts of oil disappearing on 30 mile drives.

My mother has a 2005 V8 Touareg and a 2008 V8 Touareg. Both are 100% without issue. The '05 is fully loaded with the air adjustable suspension, multi-zone climate systems, sunroof, Nav, etc. The 2008 has less of all that but it's no less comfortable she says.
The Diesel version is not available in California, I have no first-hand experience with it in the previous body style or the current. I have heard they make a great driving car because they have semitruck-like torque, but that's only hearsay.
The previous car to these was a fully loaded 2004 Passat V6. That car was very good for a long time until it lost a coil pack. Easily fixed but the 2005 Touareg caught her eye on the lot. She was being all bashful and I pretty much made her drive it. Bought the same day. I was actually sad to see the Passat go, it had earned a place in the family. She really liked that car, I did too, but she LOVES the Touareg. Enough to the point when she took employment in Alaska she bought another one, so she now has two, one here and one there.
Her previous car to the Passat was a 2000 Jetta GLX VR6. That car was great for for first 36,000 miles and fun as hell. It drove like a shot car and was actually fast. Shortly after the warranty expired it began to experience chronic emissions-related issues. They threw parts at it and it never ran the way it used to and couldn't get through a full tank without setting the SES at least once. Back seat of that car was useless for anyone over 5'4".
None of them burned oil.

There is a dealer near me with a 2011 on the lot with 21,XXX miles on it. They're asking $44,XXX.XX for it. I might go test drive it tomorrow. Will report back results.

+1. I had a friend with an 04 Jetta wagon with the 4 banger and it went through 3+ quarts between oil changes.

To date I have broken a single trunk lid gas strut. In 20K miles of driving, and it was my fault because I was in a hurry and snatched the trunk open.
