what rear end is in my 1998 Tahoe 2-door? also without jacking it up, is there a code on the diff tag, or somewhere else that will tell me if it is a limited slip? was limited slip even an option on this rig?

It'll be a 10 bolt. The G codes will tell you what the rear end is, and whether it has a posi. G80 is the posi code.

Haven't you ever heard of a 2 speed rear end?

Yes, it is the GM factory limited slip, which works OK for most people but won't stand up to much power. And, if you have a lot of power and it hooks hard enough to break, the shockwave up the driveshaft will kill a 4L60E trans.

the whole diff tag is broken off, just the little part around the bolt is still there. I guess I need to get off my butt and jack it up, put it in neutral, spin one tire and see if the other turns the same direction (L/S), or the opposite direction (open)

I just jack one side up and get in the truck and see if I can drive off the stand. .
My G80 held up to 600+ hp for 185k then started to click click click click if you got on it hard from a stop.. It's a trutrac now.
