That is what I did, I did not even move the wheels, I removed the bolts that hold the axle shaft onto the diff axles, then removed the wiring, and the four bolts holding diff in place. Comes right out, you may have to hold your tounge in the correct position, then it just falls right out. or use so...

Removing the oil pan on a 4X4 GMT400
It is possible to remove the oil pan on a 4x4 GMT400.
Just crank the wheels full left.
Drop the front diff by removing the 4 x 21mm bolts holding the front diff and you can angle the oil pan out of there.
